HeatSmart Questions

What is HeatSmart?

HeatSmart is a nonprofit, community-based education and outreach program for clean heating and cooling technologies. HeatSmart seeks to offer residents and businesses the opportunity to reduce their energy costs and carbon emissions by adopting energy efficient heat pump systems. Through a local HeatSmart campaign, residents will have the opportunity to learn more about these energy-saving technologies—and speak to a participating installer about the best fit for their home. Throughout the duration of this program, HeatSmart will offer educational “meet the installer” workshops to give you the chance to learn more about the technologies being promoted, and which offerings might be best suited for you.

How does HeatSmart work?

HeatSmart aims to help residents save on their energy bills and take advantage of a range of state, federal and utility incentives for clean heating and cooling technologies. HeatSmart offers educational content and the opportunity to learn more about and connect with installers of clean heating and cooling technologies. HeatSmart offers a straightforward, hassle-free approach to energy efficiency and heat pump improvements. The process for working with HeatSmart is simple:
A HeatSmart installer of your choice will schedule your appointment to see if a heat pump may be a good fit for your home.
The installer will assess your home and, if feasible, provide you with a quote. If you elect to move forward with your quote, your HeatSmart installer will assist in securing the applicable financing and rebates.

What is clean heating and cooling?

Clean heating and cooling (CH&C) refers to improved high-efficiency heating and cooling technologies that can use thermal energy (or be powered by energy) derived from renewable sources--including the sun, air, earth, and sustainably-harvested bioenergy. Because of their importance to meeting our state climate goals, state and local governments and utilities across the state are offering thousands of dollars in incentives to support their adoption. HeatSmart is promoting three CH&C technologies: air source heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps and energy efficiency improvements.

Who is organizing HeatSmart Orange?

HeatSmart Orange is the latest community-driven, county-supported, clean energy initiative. HeatSmart Orange is directed by community leaders who are volunteering their time to support this effort. HeatSmart Orange is a program offered through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). If you’re considering a new heating or cooling system or you're interested in finding out how to save energy in your home, this campaign is for you!
